Does It Really Work?

Progressive skincare gets a boost from cutting-edge technology
and scientific data.
PENTAXYL's™ main
ingredient,
Matrixyl®*, was originally sold for its
wound-healing properties. One particular combination of
amino acids my be essential in preserving levels of these
proteins, and it is available specifically as a topical
supplement. It's palmitoyl pentapeptide-e, otherwise known
as Matrixyl®.
At the 20th World Congress of Dermatology
in 2002, the results from 3 independent studies testing the
effects of a topical cream containing Matrixyl® over a long period of time were presented.
16 healthy women applied a regular
cream to one side of their face and the same cream with Matrixyl®
to the other side. The study was designed to run for
4 months, but there was a significant improvement in the
Matrixyl® side after only 2 months.
Wrinkle depth ,length, volume and
roughness were measured at the start of the test and at various
intervals throughout the test. The Matrixyl®
side showed positive results in ALL areas.
Amazingly, skin thickness increased
1.5 times faster with the Matrixyl® cream over the
standard cream. The inflammatory side effects commonly
seen with this type of thickening were not observed in the
Matrixyl® treated side.
Our skin is designed to rebuild
itself since it is the largest of the body's organs and the most
needed. As we age, however, this regenerative process
slows down and leaves many with fine lines, wrinkles and furrows
and our skin can sag as well.
Another study presented at the 20th
World Congress of Dermatology tested Matrixyl® on 49 women with
photodamaged (sun-damaged) skin. This time, researchers paid
specific attention to Matrixyl®’s effects on the
structure of collagen and elastin in the skin. Over a four-month
period, the women who used Matrixyl® had substantial
improvements in wrinkle volume and skin texture. Furthermore,
the amino acid triggered an increase in elastin and collagen
levels in the women and enhanced the structure of the proteins
as well. Researchers called it “a safe and potent alternative…in
wrinkle repair” (Stein 2002a).
The most extensive of these studies
presented at the world congress, however, came from Procter &
Gamble Company. For 14 weeks, Matrixyl® was tested in
a randomized, double-blind, split-face study on 92 women ages 35
to 55 years. The women, who suffered from moderate to severe
photodamaged skin, applied Matrixyl® to one side of
their faces and a standard cream to the other. They did this
twice a day; the effects were measured every four weeks during
the study. Results showed that the application of Matrixyl®
cream had significantly positive effects on facial lines and
texture at every time interval. In addition, the women reported
substantial satisfaction with the Matrixyl® cream in
self-assessment surveys (Stein 2002b).
